He is all boy! For his birthday party it was all things that go. He LOVES trucks and trains. He and Taya played with his balloons for hours, then we had dinner with both sets of grandparents, opened presents and then topped the night off with cake and ice cream.

Garrett was sick and Taya decided she was going to give him a check-up. It was cute to watch them play together. It melted my heart when she loving ruffled his hair and told him how proud of him she was for being so brave during his check-up and that she was sorry he was sick.
This is Garrett's new favorite pastime. He loves to get in and out, wave and say "see ya" and then cruise around the house backwards. Over and over and over! It keeps him busy and makes him so happy!

We volunteered to do a story of our experiences for the NICU to hang on their wall of success stories to encourage parents during their babies stay. Even five years later I still cry when I look at pictures, read or write about our experiences with our kids. I love that it always reminds me how truly blessed we are to have these two special kids in our family. I know you have all heard the story, but I thought that I would share what I wrote as a reminder to all of you that miracles do still happen every day.

Taya's story....

Our little miracle girl Taya was born at 26 weeks 4 days
gestation. She weighed 1 lb. 6oz. at birth and was 12 ¼ inches long. After a very quick peek at her, she was
whisked through the operating room window to the NICU doctors and nurses waiting
on the other side to help her. She needed a lot of help to get her
breathing. Taya spent 2 ½ months on and
off of the ventilator before she could finally move onto the CPAP and then
eventually on to a nasal cannula. Her
biggest struggle in the NICU was breathing on her own. Her right lung kept
collapsing each time she was extubated.
After numerous tries she was finally successful and strong enough to get
air into her lungs. After being on the vent for so long we worried about ROP.
She did have stage 1 ROP that corrected itself before she left the NICU and has
had no lasting effect. When it was time
to learn how to eat Taya again struggled with keeping her oxygen level up. She would desat almost every time she
ate. Sometimes it was discouraging
because it was a very slow process to get her up to a full feed in an
acceptable amount of time. It took a few
weeks and a specialized feeding plan but she caught on! After 96 days of the ups and downs of the
NICU life we were ecstatic to take her home with the help of portable oxygen
and a pulse-ox monitor! Taya thrived at
home and was able to go off of the oxygen completely within three weeks. When Taya was 18 months and still not walking
on her own we suspected something was wrong. Taya was diagnosed with Cerebral
Palsy by the time she was 2. Even though we expected some long term effects
from her premature birth, it was hard to hear the diagnosis. Not knowing what to expect we feared the
worst. Five years later we realize how
blessed we truly are. Taya is a fully functional, happy, smart, funny and
beautiful child. She has a strong will
and does not let her CP limit her. She
continues to amaze us every day with her determined and uplifting spirit. She
truly is our little miracle!

Three and a half years later we once again found ourselves
in the operating room with our baby being whisked through the window to the
NICU staff waiting on the other side.
Our second little miracle, Garrett, was born at 30 weeks 5 days
gestation. He weighed in at 3lbs 3oz and was 16 ¼ inches long. The extra 4weeks
in the womb made a big difference for Garrett. He was able to get off the
ventilator within a few hours of being born. He was on the high flow cannula
for most of his NICU stay, but on very little oxygen. Garrett was much bigger than his sister and
seemed to be more stable. He had fewer IV lines and his PICC line was in for a
much shorter amount of time. We did go through a few things we hadn’t
experienced with his sister though. He was quarantined for a 24 hour period
because he showed signs of a having a virus. He also had a grade 1 bleed on his
brain that was detected on his “30 day of life” head ultrasound. We were worried and didn’t know what it would
mean in the future, but as of 19 months later he shows no sign of any kind of
developmental delay. Garrett was what
they like to call a “feeder-grower”. He just needed time to grow and develop a
little before being able to come home.
He was a good eater and gained weight steadily. After 41 days he was able to come home with
no extra equipment attached! Today he is a very active and rambunctious little
boy who loves to play and laugh. It was hard to be a repeat NICU parent, but it
made it a little easier to know the routine and already have faith and trust in
the awesome staff. We are very blessed to
have two amazing miracles in our lives.

Taya got to ride all by herself for the first time on Sunday and LOVED it. She has been asking for a while and I would always tell her when she turned five I would let her. The first words out of her mouth when I asked if she really wanted to ride all by herself were "well, I am five now mom." She did great, even in that big ol' saddle. Her grandpa and I were never more than a few steps away, but she was thrilled to be holding the reins and making him turn all by herself. I am so proud of her and love that she still enjoys this kind of "therapy" so much!

Thanks Dad for taking such great care of Sun for all these years. I could never repay you or tell you how much it means to me to see Taya ride him. Ready or not, Garrett has decided to start climbing. He can't quite get on the couch yet, but if he tried just a little bit harder he could do it. I don't encourage or help because I am NOT ready for this stage. It started with him climbing in and out of Taya's rocking chair and then progressed to climbing in and standing on her rocking chair (which quickly found it's way to the basement before we had stitches or a broken tooth). I am glad he found this outlet for his climbing need, although it is a little scary when he does it 20 times in a row as fast as he can and his little legs are wobbly as he climbs the stairs. It is also a little scary when he stands on top of the slide and yells to the neighbor across the street. He is all BOY! It's a good thing he is so cute and we love him so much. :)

This was from my phone and I can't get the video to play the sound. You'll just have to imagine his cute little voice counting one, two, three, GO! I bet you thought this was going to be a post with pictures of us at the zoo. Nope. We are the zoo. The stuffed animal zoo!

Taya has sooooo many stuffed animals I can not even keep track anymore. She knows each one of them and where they belong on her shelf (or floor since she ran out of shelf room) and takes turns with a different one each day and each night. It is very rare for her to choose the same stuffed animal two nights in a row. She tells me that she can never get rid of them because they are all special and she loves each one. We seriously have a zoo! What kid can say they have a stuffed lama?? (thanks grandma!) On the other hand who can resist that face when she says how much she loves them and needs just one more? Obviously not anyone who knows her! Sometimes she likes to pile them up all around her and play in the pile. One day she might just disappear in them!
Garrett has almost mastered the skill of walking. Surprisingly he hasn't just taken off and started walking full time. I think he still likes to crawl because he can get to things faster. After a few weeks of a step here and there between things he has decided the last few days that he does like it. He walks around the living room when I am in the kitchen and he thinks no one is looking. He also walks towards the TV without realizing it whenever it catches his attention. I'm so glad to check this skill off the list, but a little worried about what it will bring when he gets good at it! We had just a few inches of snow and it wasn't so cold that you couldn't stand to be out. After telling us her snowsuit was "a little swollen" Taya marched right out and started making snowballs and just playing in it. This is the first year she has been able to walk in the snow by herself, so she was very excited to tromp around. It was perfect packing snow, so I joined her and we made this little snowman to her specifications.

Nicchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00200849324173056884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7619628116697795084.post-90539059602437249792011-11-01T21:27:00.008-06:002011-11-01T22:15:40.922-06:00Halloween 2011This year I should have been dressed up as a zoo keeper to wrangle our "chunky monkey" and "cute little stinker" (skunk)!

We had fun trick-or-treating at Grandma and Grandpa Morgans with all the cousins and around our neighborhood. We even had a special Halloween guest come trick-or-treating at our house! Boy was I surprised to open the door and find this barnstormer pilot on my porch! She wanted her pumpkin to be happy, and picked the happiest face we could find for hers. Jared carved a cute little foot for Garrett. I opted for the dollar store plastic stick in face for mine. I posted a while back about the March for Babies and asked you all to save the date! Well, I'm a little late on starting the fundraising because I was waiting to see if the weather was going to be warm enough for the kids to be out, and make sure Garrett was doing well enough. I think both of those things are good to go! The March for Babies is on Saturday May, 14 at This is the Place State Park. I would love for all of our family members to come join us for this fun day to raise money and celebrate the lives of our preemies! Obviously it didn't make Garrett feel any better about being there!

Everything went really well and the surgeon was able to fix both sides with the hernias. We had to stay just one night for oxygen level observation but thankfully there were no breathing problems! Garrett is a little sore but doing well and getting back to his sweet, happy little self.
Nicchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00200849324173056884noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7619628116697795084.post-53826644857693829302011-03-21T13:20:00.005-06:002011-03-21T13:40:40.448-06:00Girls night out.

Thanks to a friend, Taya and I scored some awesome free tickets to Disney on Ice last week. I was so excited to take her out for the evening. With all that has been going on the past few months I knew she could use something special just for her. Jared stayed home with Garrett while Taya and I had a night on the town! It was so much fun. Taya was in awe the whole time. She was waving and laughing and answering Mickeys questions, which is pretty good for this shy little girl in a public place! She even talked to the Grandpa sitting next to us and let him lift her over the seat for me. She loved all of the dancing and singing, and was thrilled when Woody, Jessie and Buzz Lightyear came skating out. She talks about the show every day and keeps asking me if we can get more tickets to go again.

The show was spectacular and our seats were great! It is now on my list of things to do every year when it comes to town. We had a great night together! Thanks Lisa, Jared and Mom for making this fun night out possible!

Nicchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00200849324173056884noreply@blogger.com1
